How to prepare for your Family Photo session

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

Family Sessions can be stressful but they shouldn't be. I'll help you prepare so you have a fun & relaxing session with me.

What do we wear?

Keep it simple. Neutral colors, nothing too bright, or with busy patterns. Jeans and a white t-shirt work great. Just don't dress everyone in the family the same way. Mix it up a little. I have a Pinterest board to help you if you need and you are more than welcome to call me for help.

The Session Won't Take That Long

I have a prepared shoot list that I work from so your session is fast but efficient. I know little ones don't always like having their pictures taken or being in a new place, so efficiency is key. Depending on how many people you have in your group, your session could be 30 minutes to an hour. Closer to 90 minutes for a new born session with feeding and changing breaks. I will have toys and snacks as a distraction for the kids as well.

What if my child throws a tantrum?

It happens! I have a toddler, trust me, it happens sometime. It's ok. This is one of the many reasons why I only take one to two appointment per day. We aren't on a strict time schedule and we can work with your child until they are ready to have their photos taken. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting comfortable with their surroundings... a snack never hurts as a bribing tool. Bottom line, don't stress. You'll see the stress all over your face in the photos and you won't be happy in the end.

I make it fun!

I let the kids see the back of the camera (which they always get a kick out of), I give them a chance to make silly faces, and we play games too. If the kids are having a good time, the parents can relax, and the photos come out amazing!
